After the fans desperately begged for its release (and some delays later), Mau P finally decided to let it out: “Beats From The Underground” is a low-key, adrenaline-spiking tech house; a solid first release for 2024 from the genre phenom.
Securing the Bronze Spot in our “MVP of the Year” selection some days back, Mau P had a major 2023: The Dutch act engineered one of the most heavily rotated tunes “Metro” (Kevin de Vries), and remixed bigwigs such as Calvin Harris, Armand Van Helden and the Swedish House Mafia. Within the first month of this year, the breakout alias has confirmed DJ residency in Wynn Las Vegas nightclub and the ‘XXX’ Radio-show on Sirius XM. Looking at his touring schedule, it’s lined up with one event after another: all serving hard evidence as to how much the scene wants more of his bold, brash, and fresh musical catalog.
For the moment, we have his latest single. “Beats From The Underground” came out on Repopulate Mars, the same imprint which scored the debut and viral “Drugs From Amsterdam.” Taking the familiar schematic, BFTU focuses on two core aspects: a low-key but hefty sub-bassline and quirky sound selection (grungy synth stabs, piano notes, processed vocal samples, and other oddities). A rap vocal is chopped and looped over the funky beat, even serving as the ‘DJ’ tag to provide the hype. Needless to say, creative repetition is the key to good tech house: something Mau P has mastered, as the instrumental introduces just enough variations without distracting too much from the ongoing groove. By the time the final snare riser comes after the cheeky breakdown, the track hurls another frisky round of the drop without breaking pace.
It’s safe to say “Beats From The Underground” is quite the promising start from Mau P, and judging by his upcoming IDs, it won’t be long before there’s another banger from him.
