In this interview, Alden Song reflects on the key influences that have shaped his path. From his musical household upbringing to discovering his passion for DJing and production, we explore how his experiences, favorite artists, and live performances have molded his sound and established him as a rising star in today’s electronic music scene.

EG: Hi Alden Song, how are you today?

Alden Song: Hi guys! I’m doing great, thanks for having me!

EG: To start, can you share what inspired you to pursue a career in producing and DJing? Was it an experience, a piece of music, or an artist?

Alden Song: My dad is a DJ and my mom is a singer, so I grew up in a very musical household. They and all their friends were part of the House Music scene in NYC during the 90s and 00s, so I’ve been around the culture my whole life. I took an interest in DJing when I was 7 years old, and my dad helped teach me. Naturally, I started producing a few years after DJing and fell in love with it. For me, they go hand in hand, so I love doing both!

EG: Who were some of the key artists that inspired your early musical journey?

Alden Song: One artist that sticks out particularly in my mind is Martin Garrix. He served as a huge inspiration to me because his music blew up when he was young. Seeing a young guy like that DJ Ultra mainstage, then tour the world, start his own record label, and help the next generation of DJs and producers made me want to do exactly what he’s doing.

EG: How did the music you grew up listening to inspire your current sound and style?

Alden Song: I grew up in a household where Dance Music was being played all the time because my parents and their friends were in the club scene in NYC. So naturally, I started listening to Dance Music as well. Early on in my career, I used to DJ Big Room and Progressive House, whereas now I play more House and Tech House.

“‘I listen to all kinds of music because it’s in my nature to explore all genres and art forms”

EG: Are there any particular genres or artists outside of Electronic Music that have had a significant impact on your work?

Alden Song: I meet a lot of people who say they listen to all kinds of music, but they haven’t met me. I truly believe I listen to all kinds of music because it’s in my nature to explore all genres and art forms. So, it’s hard to choose which genres and artists inspire me because they all do! I’m also inspired by other art forms like architecture, fashion, painting, and street art.

EG: Can you tell us about a live performance that inspired you to experiment with your approach?

Alden Song: I will always remember the first real show I saw. I got to experience RÜFÜS DU SOL on tour, and it blew me away. Because that was my first real show featuring Dance Music, I was just loving it. It was also the first time I got to be around people who loved Dance Music, and they have an amazing following, which was also an amazing experience. I’ve been to many shows since, but that one opened my eyes and mind a whole lot.

EG: How do you balance incorporating your inspirations while ensuring your music remains unique and original?

Alden Song: I take inspiration from everywhere, whether it’s a sound or just a feeling. So, I always like putting my twist or interpretation on whatever I’m trying to produce. That’s why I believe my music is unique and original because it’s a way for me to express myself in a true form. It’s always evolving. I’m just at the beginning stages of this journey, and the better I get at mastering the gear and experiencing the world, the more music will keep coming.

EG: What are some unexpected sources of inspiration that have shaped your music?

Alden Song: I love traveling and seeing new places, so I always get inspired when I’m in a place that is cool or beautiful. It all comes down to the emotion that place makes me feel, and I find that inspiring. Like whenever I’m in a new city and there’s all this art and style around me, it makes me just want to be creative!

“‘I take inspiration from everywhere, whether it’s a sound or just a feeling”

EG: Can you share an example of how a random sound or everyday experience inspired a specific track?

Alden Song: I can’t think of a random sound or everyday experience. However, I produced the core idea of my single ‘The Feeling’s Right’ while I was sitting in class during school. Whenever I have time, I always sit down with my laptop in random places because it’s a different environment. So, I guess my boredom with school inspired me to produce that single!

EG: Finally, how do you approach finding new music to keep your creative ideas fresh and innovative?

Alden Song: I always find new music by looking at Spotify playlists that update frequently. I also love finding new music on social media. I spent a month in Europe last summer and was going out every night and listening to as many DJs as I could. It’s in my nature as a DJ to search and find new music, so I’m always on the hunt for new, interesting, and innovative music!
