We also had a chance to chat with the guys about this EP and what’s next for them. Enjoy!
How long has this EP been in the works?
This EP has been in the works for about a year and a half. We’ve worked on other music in that time as well, but getting all the right pieces in place for this EP, including vocalists, a 3d artist, etc took a lot longer than expected. We think the time was well spent, because this EP turned out fantastic.
What are some of the key messages you hope listeners get out of this EP?
This is our first EP, celebrating 5 years of the Birthdayy Partyy project. The whole concept of the project since its outset is the melding of elements of music we grew up on with what we see as the current and future sounds of electronic music. Classic techniques like sampling in specific ways to emulate the technology available when electronic music was first rising to prominence, sounds from old drum machines and analog synths, and pulling from the city of Chicago’s rich history as the birthplace of house music, while using more modern production techniques and sounds, like the heavy processing and interesting sound design of dubstep and drum and bass, to complement them is where we’ve found our vibe. Its all about the juxtaposition of new and old, timeless and right-now, hence the name Classic V Future
Its also kind of a turning point for us, touching on the sound of our musical direction going forward, while also leaning on what’s gotten us this far. We’ve been slowly stripping things back as we’ve gotten better as producers, and I think we’ve really honed in on what we as a duo want to do. This is really the first step we’re taking with that kind of confidence.
Who are some artists that are inspiring you right now?
Probably our biggest inspirations right now are Knock2 and ISOXO. Musically, they’re obviously incredible, and we’re loving that they’re getting the attention they deserve. But there’s more to the reason why they’re inspiring us so much right now than just their music. They have a level of camaraderie and cooperation with each other that we find extremely inspiring. They’re always working with each other, and even remixed each other’s EP’s and released them together. Having supportive peers in the music industry helps so much, but these guys took it to a completely different level. That’s basically how it is working with your twin brother, so we feel like they would kind of “get us’ in that sense.
We’ve also been really inspired by a lot of drum and bass. We’ve been big fans of the genre since we were 22 or 23, driving home to our parents house after staying out way too late at a club, and the only thing that would keep us awake that late was some good ol’ DnB. The US is having a bit of a resurgence of the genre too, so we’ve gotten to finally see some of our favorite acts of the genre live. Its also been really cool to watch our friend CLB get the kind of exposure he has within the international DnB community. He was making breaks when met, and he’s come so far that his sound pretty regularly inspires us, and there’s really no cooler feeling than getting inspired by your friends.
Speaking of friends that are also some of our biggest inspirations right now, Odd Mob has been absolutely slaying it and there’s no way he’s slowing down at all. he spent a few extra days with us in Chicago when he played here at Spybar, and we hammered out a track with him while he was here that we’re really excited about.
What’s on the horizon for you guys in 2023?
We’re going to be hosting a remix competition for the EP, then we have our yearly event Birthdayy Partyy’s Birthday Party coming up in March, which we think we finally have a perfect venue for the “boiler room style” 360 setup we’ve always wanted for this shindig. There’s really nothing like playing a set IN the crowd instead of in front of it on a stage. We’ve got tons of music coming as well. I think we have about 40 tracks in the vault currently, ranging from “almost playable and need a test with a live audience” to “completely finished and waiting on label contracts”, so its going to be a VERY busy year for us. Come along for the ride, and let’s Partyy!
