Dexter's Beat Laboratory Vol. 127
Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA managing editor Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic—to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery—DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.

Last Island‘s newest release positively sparkles with energy and flair. The artist notes that he wanted this song to be all about “colourful and vibrant synths all with an ’80s influence,” and he couldn’t have been more spot-on. “Dream On” is full of gorgeous melodies and is guaranteed to lift spirits even in its first few seconds.
In a recent tweet, Desert Star announced that he’d “been listening to a loooot of ’80s music (and it’s about to become very clear).” He was right. His latest Monstercat release, “Empty Sky,” would be right at home in a feel-good retro montage, complete with the open road and clear sky that are depicted in the song’s artwork.
Hospital Records is making its mark already this decade with a noteworthy new compilation, Sick Music 2020. The collection features 25 new songs from artists like Urbandawn, London Elektricity, and Etherwood. Etherwood’s contribution is the slow-burning “American Fruity,” which is highlighted by a dreamy piano melody and stellar drum ‘n’ bass production.
Lowly, too, appears to have a big year up its sleeves. The New York indie label just released Far Out‘s newest tune, “Strike,” which marks the first release from their forthcoming Bridges in Time EP. Like much of Far Out’s discography, “Strike,” has an intense and otherworldly atmosphere about it, leaving the listener wondering what’s coming next.
Tycho has a thrilling year ahead of him. After being nominated for a Grammy for Weather, the producer has announced he’s releasing its instrumental companion, Simulcast, in late February. “Outer Sunset” is the sister song to “Skate,” and its an instrumental-oriented treat for those who love the lush themes of the original.
