Dillon Francis‘ status as one of the spunkiest acts in the electronic circle has been well-earned and cemented through a steady stream of releases that, over the years, have evidenced Francis’ capacity to think outside the box. In short, his playful personality is always alive in his music.
His catalog is consequently colored by imaginative tunes; the constituting cuts turn dance music on its head and prove infallible when it comes to eliciting the shake of the hips from streamers who bump the eccentric beats. Nothing’s different on Magic Is Real (Part 1), released jointly through Francis’s IDGAFOS imprint and Diplo’s Mad Decent label housing.
The four-cut mixtape hosts “GO OFF (Nuthin’ 2 It)” and “Bawdy,” which surfaced before the project’s debut. Magic Is (Real Part 1) is diverse: “GO OFF (Nuthin’ 2 It)’s” buoyant infrastructure allows the song to float effortlessly in line with the breezy vocal. Meanwhile, the moombahton flavor so familiar to Francis’ cornerstone sound reenters with wild spirit on “Bawdy.” Reggaeton influence is audible on “Bomboclot (Light It Up),” and not to be neglected is the heavy-handed mid-tempo heard on “Still Not Butter,” which provides the resounding finale to Magic is Real (Part 1). Magic is indeed real, and Francis works his on the mixtape.
