Glass Animals tap Denzel Curry for Tokyo Drifting', their first single in three years – EDM All Day

Glass Animals has returned with a taste of their first release in three years. “Tokyo Drifting” sees the four-piece band join forces with rapper Denzel Curry for a trap-tinged tune. Led by singer and songwriter Dave Bayley who wrote and self-produced both of their studio albums, Glass Animals broke onto the scene with their 2014 Platinum single, “Gooey” and received critical acclaim on their second album, How to Be a Human. The British psychedelic act has released “Tokyo Drifting” as part of their experimental collaboration series, Fresh Fruit. They previously dropped “Lose Control” with Joey Bada$$ in 2015 for the joint series.

Trap rhythms pave the way for “Tokyo Drifting,” with trilling hi-hats and hefty horns underlying the song structure. Bayley’s signature falsetto is later welcomed into the fold, floating with a quintessential, dreamy momentum while Curry segues into an explosive rapid-fire verse. A departure from Glass Animals’ indie experimental territory, “Tokyo Drifting” blends their atmospheric mellowness with an infectious energy that pairs surprisingly well with Curry’s rap flow.

“It’s an ironic internal flex—me as a narrator describing/taking the piss out of an extreme alter ego version of myself; a version of me that can do things that I’m uncomfortable doing. Wavey Davey is my f–ked-up Sasha Fierce; he’s a geezer, a street fighter, he can dance, he parties hard, he’s spontaneous. He can take hits and be told he is s–t and not care because he’s confident. He can fight everything the world throws at him,” stated Bayley in a press release.
