In nationwide first, Michigan to ban flavored e-cigarettes – EDM All Day

In a government attempt to combat underage vaping, Michigan will become the first state to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarette products.

A statement released Wednesday from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer cites statistics linking the use of e-cigarettes amongst youth to the considerable dangers of the popular vaping products that have emerged nationwide in the past 12 months as central reasons for the statewide ban.

“Fueled by the availability of flavors akin to Fruit Loops, Fanta, and Nilla wafers (to name just a few), e-cigarette sales to high school students increased 78% from 2017 to 2018,” Whitmer writes in her statement to Michigan senators. “That ends today.”

The ban, which comes in the wake of the state’s chief medical executive deeming youth vaping a “public health crisis,” is expected to forbid the sale of flavored e-cigarettes online and in-store. The mandate would also outlaw misleading advertisements dubbing the smokeless products “clean,” “safe” or “healthy.”

With cities such as San Francisco, home of the Juul pod, proposing a ban of all e-cigarettes and the US Surgeon General declaring youth vaping a national epidemic, a potential nationwide crackdown on the product might not be all that far down the horizon.
