Hi Jacob! How are you? Thanks for joining us!
Thanks for having me – I appreciate the time.
To start, in your view, what does a meaningful, long-term relationship with your audience look like?
I think it first starts with figuring out the type of vibe that sticks with your fans and consistently building on that. It doesn’t mean your sound can’t change, but as long as you’re being unique to what you’re developing, I feel the fans will stick with you or you’ll attract new fans.
What do you think makes a crowd feel truly connected during a DJ set, and how do you try to create that connection when you’re behind the decks?
Honestly, I just stick with what I like and find that the crowd tends to go along as long as you’re creating a nice vibe – whether it’s with high energy tracks with vocals and melodies or more four-to-the floor, groovy tracks.
How do you balance audience expectations with your own creative instincts
when starting a new project?
Like I mentioned above, I just create what I like and enjoy. As long as I’m having fun, I feel like everything else is secondary.
What’s your approach to connecting with fans online, and how do you view the
role of social media in shaping your career today?
I think the best thing to do is to just to have a good time and enjoy the process of what you’re doing. Social media definitely gives you the edge to showcase a personal side of things, which I think eventually translates well for fans.
What would you say the biggest challenge is when it comes to turning live
performance energy into a lasting connection with fans beyond the event?
I feel like it’s really about creating a moment for yourself and the fans. That moment usually comes spontaneously and it’s not really something you know will happen. For example, while playing the keys, I could do a certain riff that will really grab the interest of certain fans more than others, but will also create that lasting impression that you may not really have planned for at that moment.
When you’re in the studio, do you visualise the listener or club setting, or do you let the creative process guide itself?
Usually a club setting, even though I’ll have headphones on. House music is big on the bass and drum groove, so I like to visualize people dancing and enjoying the track while I’m actually creating it. With that, I also let the creative process guide itself so it’s a little bit of both I guess.
How do you maintain authenticity when engaging with fans – whether that’s on
stage, in-person, or through your online platforms?
Follow your own intuition.
What role does your Made To Move radio show play in connecting with fans?
Has it helped build a global audience, and what steps do you take to keep those international listeners engaged?
The Made To Move radio show definitely helps me engage with fans from various dance genres. Since the radio show is about selected playlists, I’m able to showcase different types of House music that I enjoy but don’t necessarily make. Mixcloud and SoundCloud are platforms that help me see where my listeners are from, alongside the radio stations all around the world that syndicate the show every week.
Looking ahead, what kind of legacy do you hope to build through your music and connection with fans?
I want my fans to have an experience that encourages them, inspires them, or anything that helps uplift their life regardless of the context. As that moment continues to happen, I’m able to build a strong connection off that.
Throughout our conversation, it is clear that Jacob Colon’s connection with his audience stems from a grounded, instinctive approach – one built on consistency, honesty, and a genuine love for the music. Whether behind the decks, in the studio, or sharing tracks on his radio show, he remains focused on creating experiences that resonate and inspire.
