Kodat – Take Me With You
• Positive first experience with Jersey Club
• Eerie atmosphere in the funky breakdown
• Hard-hitting unpredictable drop
This is not properly trap, but rather Jersey Club. However, the French Kodat delivered such a complex hybrid of genres that I’ve picked a more generic tag. Including funky Future House vibes in the breakdown and an out-of-the-world twerk-style drop, his creation “Take Me With You” was a gorgeous surprise.
I usually avoid Jersey Club, it’s a genre that, with me, becomes easily repetitive… But, this time, I had to make an exception. Kodat created such an unpredictable pattern, constantly changing shape in a mad and wild sequence, using an otherwise boring vocal loop in a superlative way. It was a surreal atmosphere, every secondI wasn’t sure about what was coming after. What a rollercoaster!
Considering that “Take Me With You”began with a peaceful future house segment, you can imagine my shock. Speaking about the beginning, as said, we have a subtly predictable schema, with a classy piano and a funky vocal… It seems a clichè structure, but the vocal was exaggeratedly echoed, in order to add an eerie feeling. I knew that something wasn’t right.
That’s why I love Kodat surreal style: it makes the listener uncomfortable with a tricky breakdown, and then liberates the brutal energy of the unpredictable drop, often using hypnotic vocal chops. I’ve already heard something similar in his previous Spinnin’ release “DTL”, where break and drop were two different, distorted entities, but here we have a further evolution. “Take Me With You” is more mature: a club track that has the courage to break even more rules.
I’m not an expert of the genre, but that’s the fun part! “Take Me With You” was a surreal experience that left me enchanted. Kodat has some real passion for his job and, let’s be honest, a lot of fantasy.
