Learn music production with these 8 essential resources

During the time of COVID-19, we’re finding ourselves with a lot more indoor time on our hands. Why not pick up a hobby? We’ve comprised a list of eight resources producers can use to stay educated or even begin learning about music production.

Ableton

Ableton Live 10 Suite is now free to download for 90 days. That’s right, the premier Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is available with a limited 90-day license. Click here to download Ableton.

Ableton also partnered with Coursera to Learn Live 10 for free with Berklee Online to guide new producers through the fundamentals making music in three weeks. Click here to enroll.

Dance music’s top canvas also has killer tutorials on their YouTube channel from the novice user to more advanced tips.

Splice

Splice started a production Twitch program. Whether it’s kick drums, synth hits, risers, or texture, many producers use samples to speed up their creation process. A serious producer should have an extensive audio library, filled with a variety of organized samples.

Splice is a leading platform for music production offering access to millions of royalty-free samples, loops, and presets.

In the wake of COVID-19, Splice started a Twitch program on its channel every day at 5 p.m. EST that includes tutorials, breakdowns from artists, creator challenges, AMAs, feedback sessions, and more. Splice also has great production videos on their YouTube channel.

Moog

Moog announced that the Model D application was newly free in an Instagram post that called the price waiver “a gift to spread positivity, creativity, and expressivity…A chance to share the way we hear the world around us.” Noodling around with synths and developing new sounds muscle is an integral workout many producers. The audio software and plug-in developer iZotope has a good introductory article to synths for music production.

MasterClass

Learn from the best. MasterClass started a buy-one-get-one-free yearly membership to start streaming lessons from 80-plus world-class instructors anytime, anywhere. This includes production from deadmau5, Armin Van Buuren, Timbaland, and Hans Zimmer for film scoring to learn about musical environment. Click here to learn more.
