Main Course releases 'Snacks 20' compilation
Since Astronomar and BOT joined Neoteric at the helm of Main Course in 2013, the Snacks compilation series has served as a way to sate fans’ appetites for the label’s brand of energetically bizarre house music. Six years later, the tradition has achieved a milestone, with the 20th Snacks installment.
The newest edition of the series continues the label’s practice of thrusting like-minded newcomers into the spotlight. Astronomar and Cody Campbell are the only returning acts featured, though this marks Campbell’s first appearance outside of his Supraman moniker. Their contributions to Snacks 20 — “Running Tool” and “After Jeremy’s Party,” respectively — stand in stark contrast to each other; the former builds an intriguingly baffling club ambience through dissonant synth-work and erratic rhythms, while the latter takes a restrained approach by melding deep house rhythms with jazz instrumentations.
The stylistic variation between the two veteran artists encapsulates the eclectic nature of the newcomers who dominate the compilation. Deep selections from Arma and Emuh strike a much different chord than the more upbeat offerings that Foreign Language and GetCosy provide — all of which stand worlds away from the dark, techno-inspired productions of Garneau, Maddjazz, and TDRV. Perhaps the best overall sonic representative of the collection is “Lost in the Jimmy Hole,” wherein Sammy Legs fuses atonal synths, robotic vocals, and tech house percussion, resulting in a piece that is as sinister as it is silly.
The compilation is available for free download on Bandcamp within one week of its June 7 release date.
