Max Cooper bends genres with remix of Ólafur Arnalds' 'ypsilon'
The success of Max Cooper’s latest album, One Hundred Billion Sparks, solidified the Irish-born producer among an exclusive group of electronic acts who truly excel in the LP format. However, the tenacious techno/electronica talent’s take on work other than his own has arguably garnered him the most attention. Confident in his production chops as well as his sonic identity, Cooper has a history of configuring his sound alongside unexpected styles, giving everyone from Hot Chip to opera and film score composer, Michael Nyman, his introspective, yet club-ready twist.
Cooper’s latest release gives the very same treatment to downtempo/modern-classical composer, Ólafur Arnalds’ “ypsilon.” The sedately enchanted aura of the original remains in the innermost fibers of Cooper’s remix, though chopped and screwed into a rolling, ruminating dance beat. Where the rendition really shines, however, is in the whimsically intricate techno percussion, fluttering and crackling so naturally that it manages to create an atmosphere that’s equal parts tech-y and organic.
