House and techno pioneer Mr. G, also known as Colin McBean, has just released his ninth studio album, ‘The Fifth Chakra (Ambient Space Tek)’. This long-player marks a departure from his signature percussion-heavy style, offering listeners a journey through ambient soundscapes.
Released through his own Phoenix G imprint, ‘The Fifth Chakra’ showcases Mr. G’s evolution as an artist, embracing a more meditative and restrained approach. The album features ten tracks that explore the intersection of electronica and sound system culture—a primary influence in the British-Jamaican artist’s musical journey.
In a recent statement, Mr. G reflected on his creative process: “This is the album I’ve always wanted to make, never thinking I could… Also, after loving others’ bass-heavy albums, it’s a joy to put my own in the mix.”
While embracing ambient sounds, ‘The Fifth Chakra’ retains Mr. G’s signature style. ‘Mood Swing (bad day)’ features his distinctive vocal samples, while ‘So it began one Tuesday (Ambient Space Tek)’ demonstrates his skill with hypnotic loops. The album also incorporates elements of digi-dub and hi-tek jazz.
Mr. G pushes artistic boundaries in tracks like ‘Constant’, ‘Solar Eclipse NYC’, and ‘The 5th Chakra’. The album’s finale contrasts light and dark, embracing a cinematic direction in ‘Today’s Vibe…gooood’ and ‘The Dark Before The Light of Dawn’.
