Mura Masa crafts a beat out of random records
20-year-old producer Mura Masa quickly established himself as one of the most intriguing talents in electronic music, shocking the world with his unique sounds and production choices. Making considerable headway over the past few years, the London native saw a major career breakthrough with his recently released, self-titled debut album, which features collaborations with A-list artists such as A$AP Rocky, Charli XCX, and Desiigner.
Now, he’s put out even more soon-to-go viral content in joining media outlet Mass Appeal for an episode of “Rhythm Roulette” — an online series that challenges top producers such as Mr. Carmack, Brenmar and araabMUZIK to produce beats. The conceit is that each producer must randomly choose records to sample and then create a new track. Mura Masa pulls out William Basinski’s “A Shadow in Time,” “Dreamt Takes” by Luis, and Cognition’s “The Road.”
Watch as Masa demonstrates his stellar Ableton skills in taking pieces from each record to create a downtempo, UK-style beat that gives off positive vibes all around.
