Premiere: John Monkman – WARP
Sasha knows good talent when he hears it. One of his more recent recruits is John Monkman, who’s now become somewhat of a staple on Last Night On Earth since his impressive label debut, Make Noize, in 2017. Now, Delta Ray illustrates an ambitious artist who only continues to refine his sound. The EP’s A-side is punchy and vibrant, but we’ve opted to focus on its closer, “Warp” for a premiere.
Taking a bit of inspiration from Coldplay the lyrics, “I will try to fix you,” the track is ethereal in Monkman’s own way. It stirs euphoria warm, twinkling bursts of arpeggio and a buzzing bassline that soothes the eardrums. Glitchy sound effects make their way into the background in a subtle, yet attention-grabbing way that makes for a captivating ride from start to finish. While Monkman has been taking a darker, powerful route in his musicmaking as of late, “Warp” is a gentle reminder that the producer can still pack in heaps of emotion into his work like he did as an Anjunadeep regular years ago.
