It has been almost exactly eight years to the day since post-hardcore screamer Sonny Moore officially launched his Skrillex moniker with an aptly titled, My Name Is Skrillex EP. Electronic music was experiencing its first real emergence from the underground, but before Skrillex positioned himself to completely revolutionize the stateside bass music market, acts like Noisia, Skream & Benga, and of course Pendulum ruled the roost. The OWSLA head honcho has always dutifully paid homage to the greats that helped propel him to his own now-astronomical level of success, but one track in particular has always managed to find its way into Skrillex DJ sets dating back to 2011 — Pendulum’s seminal “The Island Pt. 1 (Dawn).” Years later we’re now finding Moore come full circle with the delivery of his official remix of “The Island” ahead of Pendulum’s highly anticipated upcoming LP, The Reworks. In a statement that comes along with the release, Skrillex explains,
The tenacious new remix product is Skrillex’s first solo drop since last year’s back-to-back “Humble” and “Babylon” remixes, now he’s back with a classic hair-raising spin on “The Island.” Keeping pieces of the original’s vocal framework and iconic chord progression, Skrillex injects “The Island Pt. 1 (Dawn)” with a head-spinning arrangement of heavy, percussive kicks and his characteristically sharp snare pops, chopping the tune’s melody into a thunderous break. With the majority of his production work leaning heavily into new pop territories over the last few years, Skrillex returns to rare form on his new Pendulum co-sign, and if a sophomore album from Moore ever does materialize, rest assured that his classic Skrillex sound has remained firmly intact.
