Sonic worlds collide as TOKiMONSTA remixes Ólafur Arnalds' 'they sink'
TOKiMONSTA‘s latest is a true sonic gem. The Los Angeles-based producer, known for her textural club beats, has surprised fans with a wonderfully jazzy spin on Icelandic neo-classical composer Ólafur Arnalds‘ “they sink.”
While the original represents an aural journey that ultimately feels unrealized, TOKiMONSTA’s rendition is all about the destination. Opening with the soft-spoken nature of its predecessor, TOKi’s remix slowly introduces a plethora of R&B drums before dropping a funky-smooth guitar into the mix. The track wanders into its defining build and culminating drop, where Arnalds’ eerie yet comforting undertones remain, but have been painted over with a fresh coat of good times.
TOKiMONSTA is playing Friday, July 26 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, before playing a duo of shows alongside Bonobo in Denver and San Francisco on Aug. 2 and 3.
Composer Ólafur Arnalds recently announced his takeover of the London Southbank Center for a show titled Opia, with accompanying talent including Grandbrothers, Rhye, Poppy Ackroyd and Josin.
