Virgil Abloh collaborates with Pioneer DJ to produce translucent CDJs and mixer
Virgil Abloh has translated his conceptual expertise as the menswear artistic director of Louis Vuitton and the CEO of Milan-based Off-White to his new collaborative hardware design with Pioneer DJ. Abloh partnered with the venerated hardware brand to produce transparent, unlabeled models of the Japanese manufacturer’s CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2, which will be shown in an exhibition at The Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago. Entitled “Virgil Abloh: Figures Of Speech,” the exhibition will display the newly minted models from June 10 – September 22.
“I aimed to design a see-through and non-labeled rendition of the classic models to inspire a different sound while DJing–and perhaps a new way for music technology and human interaction to equal a different result,” Abloh said of his creative vision for the Pioneer pieces.
Abloh is also rumored to have worked on a translucent mixer for Pioneer, according to Benji B and Gilles Peterson, who both published posts about the clear model on social media. For now, the CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2 are the sole two products to debut from Abloh and Pioneer’s artistic interplay.
