Watch: MGMT share lo-fi visual to pair with new single, 'In The Afternoon' – EDM All Day
MGMT are making new artistic headway out on their own.
After an impressive 2018 supported by their joyously received LP, Little Dark Age, the indie synth-pop stalwarts have been relatively quiet for most of 2019…until now. MGMT just put out a video for their new single entitled “In The Afternoon.” This marks the first new music since the release of Little Dark Age, but it’s a big step forward for the band in more ways than one.
Firstly, they directed the music video themselves. A quick glance may have communicated this from the less-than crystal-clear production value. However, given that music videos are grounded in the music itself, the message seems to be a return to a more retro aesthetic, a tonal parallel of the song itself.
Secondly—and this reason may contribute to the lo-fi production quality—the song was independently released by the band. For the better part of a decade, MGMT was either beholden to Sony or Columbia, but it seems they are opting for more complete control over their output.
Watch the official video for “In The Afternoon” below to get a glimpse of what’s to come from MGMT. The song will be available to purchase as a part of a limited edition 12″ vinyl with another new track titled “As You Move Through the World” in March of 2020.
