Weekend Rewind: One year ago, Yodeling Walmart Kid became national treasure Mason Ramsey before our eyes with Whethan at Coachella
Exactly one year ago, the internet was passing around a viral clip of an 11-year-old boy yodeling Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues” in a Walmart. You had to commend the little fellow—his pre-teen pipes and his funny little cowboy getup were hilariously charming. Less than a month later, he’d be on stage with Whethan at Coachella and a fleeting internet joke would actually turn into the fifth grader from rural Illinois getting a record deal with Atlantic Records and the world being introduced to our new national treasure, Mason Ramsey.
Not old enough to be cancelled, and too young to fail, Mason Ramsey has climbed his way into the hearts of Americans over this last year. We came for “Famous” and then we just we stayed for the terrific memes. Now, a year later, it appears Ramsey and his bud Whethan are even in the studio together. What a time to be alive, right?

The timing couldn’t be better, too. With country music primed to have a huge moment in the sun, we’re sure glad Lil Hank Williams is around to ride that wave. Who knows? Maybe next year he’ll be brining Whethan out during his Coachella set. Revisit last year’s moment below.
