DJ Shadow shares 'Urgent, Important, Please Read,' the second single from upcoming LP, 'Our Pathetic Age'
Turntable mastermind DJ Shadow recently announced his upcoming LP, Our Pathetic Age, that will be his most extensive to date. The album is set to include 23 tracks, with half being instrumental, highlighting Shadow’s own production prowess and the other half featuring rappers that match his reputation within hip-hop.
The first single, “Rosie,” was from the instrumental section of the album. The new single, “Urgent, Important, Please Read” features three guest MCs: Rockwell Knuckles, Tef Poe and Daemon. Shadow has spoken that the theme of this album is humanity’s addiction to distraction, and now with guest vocalists in tow, he can bring that message to light with words.
The track begins with traditional rapping as Shadow drives the words with the rhythms he’s crafted in the beat. But from there the song becomes more of a thought-provoking sermon. Its last line is: “So there you have it. A few different perspectives to reinforce the notion that you are not going crazy, and you are not being paranoid, and everything that you’ve been worried about are the exact things that need to be on your mind. The question is, what do we do about it?”
After that, the track closes with over two minutes of just the beat, clearly leaving space for the listener to consider their own answer to that dreaded question.
