Sydney’s Pat Carroll shares atmospheric ‘Augur’ EP

Sydney composer/producer Pat Carroll seems to delve deeper into experimentation with each release, and his new EP Augur is no exception

Out now local imprint, Eyegaze, the 3-tracker showcases Carroll’s range of production, from chilling ambience to driving, club-ready techno, with each track blending seamlessly into the next for what is almost a mini-mix more-so than an EP.

Carroll, who is a pHD candidate at Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music focusing, says “the melodies in Discrepancy and Augur are fairly similar to each other, and I wanted to play with that by changing the harmony behind it throughout those two tracks. Discrepancy is fairly dark with stagnant harmony, then in Augur it begins to grow into this really dense texture around the melody, moving between minor and major. I always interpret those kinds of harmonic moves as an expression of hope, but its so subjective.”

Augur is the second EP from Carroll, who first captured our interest in 2018 with his debut Conditions EP, another fascinating 3-track effort that would go down a treat for fans of Floating Points or Jon Hopkins. Since then, he has released a handful of mixes for the likes of triple j and Red Bull Music, as well remixes and a luscious single Plateau earlier this year.
